Today’s live updates have ended, but there’s still plenty to catch up on. Read what you missed below and find more awards season coverage at apnews.com.

Hollywood’s awards season has kicked off with the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, where “Hamnet” and the highly nominated “One Battle After Another” received top honors.

Comedian Nikki Glaser returned for a second year to host the ceremony at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, taking shots at CBS in her opening monologue.

It’s a champagne-soaked party featuring some of the biggest names in film and television, even if the awards won’t exactly forecast the Oscars. Before the show, fashion took the center stage on the red carpet.

Here’s film critic Jocelyn Noveck’s review of the best drama film winner:

“Tell me a story,” the earthy young woman asks the shy Latin tutor early in Chloé Zhao’s “Hamnet.” What story, he asks? “Something that moves you.”

She’s made a shrewd choice of storyteller. This awkward young man seems to have a way with words as he recounts the tragic myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. As well he should: One day he’ll be known as the finest wordsmith in the world.

But Agnes, though being wooed by William Shakespeare himself, doesn’t have the same relationship with words, nor need for them. Unlike her bookish suitor, her mystical nature — some say her mother was a forest witch! — and appetite for life lend her ready access to a seemingly volcanic array of emotions, from giddy joy to unfathomable grief, all at the tips of her earth-soiled fingers.

And volcanic is the best way to describe Jessie Buckley’s startling performance in “Hamnet,” Zhao’s unabashedly emotional adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s acclaimed novel. Also starring a magnetic Paul Mescal as Will, it’s a story that imagines the early life of the young couple from Stratford. And as O’Farrell’s readers know, it centers on a life-altering loss: the death of their 11-year-old son, Hamnet.

Here’s Film Writer Jake Coyle’s review of the best musical or comedy film winner:

In Paul Thomas Anderson ’s gloriously messy, madcap roller coaster ride through modern America, objects in the rear view may go out of sight, but they don’t disappear.

Political struggles never die in “One Battle After Another,” they just repeat. Or maybe they grow older and become paranoid, pot-smoking, pajama-wearers like Bob Ferguson ( Leonardo DiCaprio ), a washed-up revolutionary living off the grid with his daughter, Willa (Chase Infiniti). The cycles of oppression and resistance are palpably felt in Anderson’s film, a decades-spanning odyssey where gun violence, white power and immigrant deportations recur in an ongoing dance, both farcical and tragic.

But “One Battle After Another” could also be fairly described as a sweet movie about a father coming to terms with his teenage daughter having a phone — which is one example of how Anderson’s destabilizing approach to big themes can turn poignant and revelatory. “Sweeping” would normally be a way to characterize a nearly three-hour-long, multigeneration saga like this, but Anderson works in a more rough-hewn, compassionate register that burrows strangely but acutely into the American psyche.

The Golden Globes don’t have an in memoriam segment, and the telecast featured no tributes to the Hollywood luminaries lost last year, like Robert Redford, Diane Keaton or Rob Reiner.

But as she bade farewell, host Nikki Glaser donned a “Spinal Tap” black baseball cap — a tribute to Reiner, who directed the film and last year’s sequel. Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner were found dead last month in a stabbing that’s cast a pall over Hollywood.

Paul Mescal told Chloé Zhao that the most important part of being an artist is learning to be vulnerable enough to be seen and how to give yourself wholly to the world.

“Even the parts of ourselves that we’re ashamed of, that we’re afraid of, that are imperfect. So the people that we speak to, they can also learn to see themselves and fully accept themselves,” Zhao said.

He didn’t direct the winning “Hamnet” — that was Chloé Zhao — but he was a producer on the film.

“I love the book but I thought there was really only one filmmaker on the face of the planet who could tell the story,” Spielberg said of Zhao before yielding the mic to her.

“You see?” he said after coming onstage and greeting the crowd with, uh, clunky French.

It was an allusion to his recent attainment of French citizenship, which the government of France defended. While language skills are generally a requirement — Clooney has said he speaks “horrible, horrible” French — the Foreign Ministry said the Clooneys were eligible for citizenship under a French law that allows for the naturalization of foreign nationals who contribute to France’s international influence and economic well-being.

Matthew Broderick presented his wife of nearly 30 years, Sarah Jessica Parker, with the Carol Burnett Award for a life of achievement in television at Tuesday’s Golden Eve, a ceremony that also added Helen Mirren to the list of legends that have won the Cecil B. DeMille Award.

Broderick suggested if she’d listened to him, it might not have happened.

“Do you really want to do TV?” the actor recalled asking Parker when she was first presented with the script for her career-making role as Carrie Bradshaw on “Sex and the City” in the 1990s. She would go on to win six Golden Globes and two Emmys.

Accepting the award, Parker said, “It has been a privilege and a dream to call myself an actor.”

Golden Eve is a new separate ceremony for the honorary career awards.

“The DeMille Award was described to me as a career recognition,” Mirren said from the stage. “But I prefer to think of it as a life lived, a life survived, a life enjoyed, a life sweated, and a life carried on, hopefully. And given that hope, I prefer to think of this as an ongoing reflection of my career rather than a eulogy.”

Harrison Ford, who won the DeMille Award in 2002, presented this year’s edition to Mirren, his co-star in 1985’s “The Mosquito Coast” and on the current “1923.”

He called her “an undeniable screen presence who brings to every scene a powerful commitment to narrative and character. And when she goes full badass, it’s awesome to watch.”

‘The Secret Agent’ is a film about memory, or the lack of memory. And generational trauma. I think that if trauma can be passed along generations, values can too. So this is to the ones that are sticking with their values in difficult moments.

“Adolescence” co-creator Jack Thorne paid tribute to the show’s young as he accepted its fourth Globe of the night, for best limited series.

“Some think that our show is about how you should be frightened of young people,” Thorne, 47, said. “It is not. It is about the filth and the debris we have laid in their path.”

He then thanked all the kids from the show and said “you are proof the world can be better. Removing hate is our generation’s responsibility. It requires thought from the top down. The possibility seems remote right now, but hope is a beautiful thing.”

Entertainment news junkies might recognize the distinctive voice announcing tonight’s awards alongside Entertainment Tonight’s Kevin Frazier. That would be Marc Malkin, Variety’s senior culture and events editor.

The red carpet veteran is known to generate online reaction with sometimes uncomfortable questions, which are often clipped into viral videos. He recently drew backlash for asking Janelle James to share what goes through her head when she sees “Heated Rivalry” actor Connor Storrie in real life considering his steamy scenes on the queer romance show. Storrie was standing right next to James.

CORRECTION: Frazier works for Entertaiment Tonight, not Entertainment Now.

A late and lamented California fast casual chain with a zany name got a name-drop from the stage.

“Queen Latifah, I met you about 20 years ago between jobs at a Koo Koo Roo and you were SO nice,” Rhea Seehorn said after Latifah presented her best female actor in a TV drama.

At its peak, Koo Koo Roo, which served grilled chicken and other mostly healthy fare, had dozens of stores in California, Nevada and Florida, but the last one closed in 2014.

There’s still a vague legal haze hanging over the Golden Globes as it rebuilds its reputation after lawsuits and scandals.

Reports in July from outlets including The Ankler, the Hollywood and The New York Times said final approval of the 2023 sale of the Globes from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to Dick Clark Productions, a property of Penske Media and Eldridge Industries, had been gummed up by objections from members of the old organization.

The Globes have been functioning fine with a preliminary approval of the deal, but three years later the deal is still apparently in need of a final OK from California’s attorney general because it involves a transition from nonprofit into for-profit. The attorney general’s office didn’t reply to a request for comment from the AP this week on the status of the deal.

The stand-up comedy performance winner has hosted five times, however, often using the opportunity to poke fun at Hollywood’s liberal elite.

“I love you for not being here,” said Wanda Sykes, introducing the category.

“If you win, I get to accept the award on your behalf,” she added. “And you’re gonna thank God — and the trans community.”

  • Kirsten Dunst spotted Lawrence nearby too, telling Mona Fastvold and Zoë Kravitz that she just wanted to say hi. Jesse Plemons soon arrived with three drinks to dole out. One was not for Lawrence, who went to stand in line for the bar.

“Heated Rivalry” stars Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams leaned into their breakout star status, with Storrie playing up the nerves as he strolled shakily onstage to help announce the winner for female supporting actor in a television series.

“Just take a deep breath and picture everyone in the audience... you know,” Williams suggested, omitting “naked” from his advice.

“I don’t really know if that works, considering everyone’s seen us... you know,” Storrie responded, referring to their show’s explicit sex scenes.

With less than an hour left in the telecast, and 10 categories still to go, the Globes are pivoting to playing people off.

The first victim was Kleber Mendonça Filho, who despite not having a noticeably long speech, was subjected to swelling orchestral music as he delivered an acceptance speech for “The Secret Agent.”

“I’d love to say hello to everybody watching in Brazil — Hello, Brazil,” said Filho, who directed “The Secret Agent.”

“This is a very important moment in time in history to be making films. Here in the U.S. and in Brazil,” he said.

Last year, the Brazilian film “I’m Still Here” won best foreign film and best actress in a drama motion picture at the Globes.

“The Secret Agent” is all about ordinary people. It follows an unassuming scientist and widowed father who becomes a target of Brazil’s military dictatorship in the 1970s — not because he is an activist or revolutionary, but because he stands up to a business owner with ties to the regime.

“He’s in danger simply for being who he is, for holding the values he holds,” star Wagner Moura told The Associated Press. “That’s how authoritarianism works everywhere.”

Directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, “The Secret Agent” has been hailed by critics as one of the year’s best films and arrives amid a renewed international interest in Brazilian cinema.

Four best motion picture nominees in the non-English-language category are also up for drama or musical/comedy: South Korea’s “No Other Choice,” France’s “It Was Just an Accident,” Norway’s “Sentimental Value” and Brazil’s “The Secret Agent.”

That’s more international overlap in categories typically dominated by American cinema than we’ve seen this century. The only other films that recently accomplished such crossover are “Emilia Pérez,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Past Lives” and “Zone of Interest” — not all in the same year.

Even “Parasite” — which became the first non-English-language film to win the coveted Academy Award for best picture in 2020 — did not get such recognition from the Golden Globes.

International pictures’ increased presence reflects the show’s growing voting body.

The tables turned on Nikki Glaser for a moment, when Judd Apatow took the stage to present best director.

“Nikki Glaser used to be our babysitter,” he said. “That’s true. She was our babysitter. And she’s like, ‘I do standup comedy.’ And then I went online to watch her set and it was all about smoking reefer and having weird sex and then she stopped being our babysitter.”

If “Hamnet” gets some big Globes, it won’t be the first behind-the-scenes-of-a-Shakespeare-play story to do it.

It was in the comedy not the tragedy category, but 1998’s “Shakespeare in Love” won a Globe for best picture before going on to win the best picture Oscar (to the neverending anger of fans of “Saving Private Ryan”). And star Gwyneth Paltrow, denied this year for “Marty Supreme,” also won a Globe before her Oscar.

Also back in 1949, Laurence Olivier won both a Golden Globe and an Oscar for playing the actual Hamlet in the eponymous film. They were surprisingly rare wins for movies based on Shakespeare plays.
